After a long, cold winter, things are finally back on track. Literally.
Beech Ridge Motor Speedway kicks off its 66th season of stock car racing with the return of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series this Saturday night, May 24, at 7 p.m. The Pro Series, Sport Series and Wildcat divisions will be back on track to begin their 15-week march through summer on the .333-mile speedway.
Maine’s own NASCAR state championship-winning team is back to defend its crown, this time with former crew chief Mike Fowler returning to the driver’s seat. He’ll be joined by a number of familiar faces in the Pro Series ranks — from past champions Dan McKeage and Bill Rodgers, to up-and-coming young drivers Bobby Timmons III, Tyler King and Evan Beaulieu, to a strong rookie class including Jacob Dore, John Peters and Reid Lanpher. Toss in familiar faces like Kelly Moore, Steve Carrier and Corey Bubar, and you’ve got the makings of one of the most highly-anticipated championship battles in track history.
Elsewhere, Donny Morse (Sport Series) and Cole Watson (Wildcat) are expected back to defend hotly-contested championships from a year ago.
With a larger weekly purse for all three NASCAR Whelen All-American Series divisions, a new point structure providing bonuses for feature wins, and a new handicapping system encouraging better racing in the qualifying rounds, the 2014 season surely will not disappoint.
All the action begins this year with the new 7 p.m. starting time — designed to give race teams more time to prepare on race day as well as give fans an action-packed program with no lulls in the on-track product.
Beech Ridge Motor Speedway is Maine’s only NASCAR-sanctioned short track. In addition to the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series, which competes from May through September each season, the track hosts the 10-week VIP Thursday Thunder series from June through August, and Car Wars on Friday nights in August.
