SCARBOROUGH — Our own track announcer Andy Austin will accept the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge on the Beech Ridge Motor Speedway frontstretch, on one condition.
We want the speedway’s fans — many of whom have challenged Austin via the Facebook phenomenon — to donate a total of $500 during the final Thursday Thunder program tonight (August 14).
Fans are asked to bring their donations in any amount to Beech Ridge and leave them in a bucket at the 50/50 table during the 8-race Thursday Thunder season finale. Racing begins at 7 p.m., followed by a half-hour autograph session and a brief awards ceremony to honor all of the 2014 Thursday Thunder champions.
After accepting the challenge, which will be posted to the Beech Ridge Facebook page, Austin — on behalf of the track — will in turn challenge race teams competing at all short tracks across the Northeast to organize their own Ice Bucket Challenges to raise money for the battle against ALS.
The ALS Association was founded in 1985 to help find a cure for Lou Gehrig’s Disease. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is 100 percent fatal.
